Mike Snape – Post-match

Post-match

trudge, heavy legs up
            Conduit Road
still thinking of missed passes
salt sweat
              dried crystallised
around nostrils a stripe
under each eye

halfway, and strong
              afternoon sun
upon a Silver Birch, sliding
light turning
            pale wood to chalk;
a beacon
paling off into uniform blue

reaching the summit to a
crossroads, I turn and look…
downhill birds chevron
dark above the rows of houses.
